This Week: About Toile
| Toile
de Jouy is a French phrase from the mid-18th century that refers to a
fabric or wallpaper with a white or off-white background printed
with a floral or pastoral print in one color, like the one shown
on the background of this page.
The fabric was originally made in a town near Paris called Jouy-en-Josas, but is now made by every major fabric house and wallpaper printer in the world. It has especially enjoyed a resurgence in home decorating in recent years with the popularity of French Country decor. Toile looks great when paired with checks or stripes or both! A room with toile wallpaper and toile window treatments and bedding makes an especially appealing sight. Trim the curtains and bedding with a bias stripe and furnish the room with distressed painted white furniture and voila, you have a beautiful French Country room! For a more formal look, pair the fabric with cherry furniture and use linen toile with fine linen stripes and checks. Accessorize with antiques! |
